Left Behind by the Floods: Women’s right to health in Lake Baringo

Nairobi, Paris — 4 September 2026

When floods submerged Kampi Ya Samaki Health Centre in Baringo, Kenya — one of six health facilities affected — women lost access to the antenatal care, safe deliveries and family planning services they relied on. Today, the facility operates with a single staff member, provides outpatient care only, and still depends on the neighbouring snake park for electricity to refrigerate its vaccines.

Human Dignity and CEDGG first documented these impacts in research published last year. We returned to Lake Baringo in May 2026 and found that major challenges persist: six health facilities remain affected by flooding, and women continue to face barriers to healthcare, safe water and sanitation, alongside heightened risks of gender-based violence, malaria and dengue.

Our new report calls for concrete action: climate-resilient health services, better access to healthcare for displaced women and girls, and a stronger response to gender-based violence.

The report has been submitted ahead of Kenya’s review by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
